Happy Holidays

Thanksgiving is one of the better holidays people celebrate. A day of thankfulness, a day to be with friends and family in order to eat good food and reflect on all the good things in your life. Here in the desert southwest we’re doubly lucky because the temps and weather are usually perfect for whatever outdoor activity you choose. My life is totally rad and I have so many things to be grateful for; I always get introspective this time of year because nine years ago my life was totally fucked. I was living in Utah “going to college” majoring in alcoholism with a minor in prescription drug abuse. I couldn’t make it to class, I wasn’t doing anything that I’m passionate about, and I couldn’t keep from drinking for more than a couple of hours. I loved snowboarding and backpacking, but I wasn’t able to do any of these things because I couldn’t put down the drink. In order to support my addictions I resorted to shadier and shadier behavior. As I quickly found out I’m a terrible criminal and I was arrested a number of times in the months of November and December of 2007. Fast forward to today I have a job that I love, I climb almost full time, snowboard part time, and have the love of my beautiful climbing partner.
You have a significant mood shift by doing three things: singing, laughing, and expressing gratitude. That’s why the holiday season is so amazing it’s a time of year devoted to giving, gratitude, and goals. It’s so easy for me to get “bogged down” in the run around with work, training, and relationships; It’s so easy for me to forget how good I have it. That’s why this past holiday season and moving on through the new year I will remain grateful and goal oriented. I will work really hard in order to buy a trailer, quit my job, and go on a huge climbing trip. Oh yeah and snowboard a shit load!
